(Reuters) – Canada’s WestJet Airlines said on Wednesday the union representing its maintenance engineers had rejected its new proposal and filed notice of a second strike, just days after the union called off the strike and agreed to return to the bargaining table. .
WestJet, which is backed by Onex Corp and competes with Air Canada, is facing demands from employees for better working conditions and higher wages.
The suspension of the Fraternal Association of Aircraft Mechanics could occur as soon as June 28, the airline said in a statement.
The carrier said its latest offer included revised wages that would see aircraft maintenance engineers receive a 22% increase over four years.
The union did not immediately respond to a Reuters request for comment.
Last week the airline canceled 40 flights, affecting 6,500 customers, after the union called it on a 72-hour strike. On June 20, the union withdrew its strike notice and agreed to return to discussions.
