BEIJING (Reuters) – Tencent Holdings (OTC:) Ltd’s newly released game “Dungeon & Fighter” (DnF Mobile) is off to a strong start, dominating the top-grossing charts on Apple’s (NASDAQ:) iOS platform in China for nearly a month. industry data showed.
The game, which launched on the world’s largest gaming market on May 21, crossed the $100 million mark in just 10 days, according to a report released by analytics company Sensor Tower this week.
It also topped the global mobile gaming revenue growth chart for May and ranked 8th in total revenue.
In the first 10 days of launch, DnF Mobile’s revenue in the Chinese iOS market surpassed the combined revenue of Tencent’s other popular games “Honor of Kings” and “PUBG Mobile,” according to a separate report from Sensor Tower on June 17.
The surge contributed to Tencent’s mobile gaming revenue growth of 12% in May, according to Sensor Tower.
Based on the popular PC franchise, DnF Mobile has been available worldwide for many years. The game’s launch in China was delayed due to Beijing’s temporary suspension of new game approvals.
DnF Mobile’s early success comes amid ongoing tensions between Tencent and smartphone providers over the distribution of gaming revenue.
Earlier this month, Tencent removed the game from some Android app stores, citing contract expiration.
Game developers in China have long had contentious relationships with distributors over issues such as revenue sharing as mobile games become increasingly popular in the broader gaming market. The standard 50% revenue sharing has often become a bone of contention.
