(Reuters) – A Norfolk Southern (NYSE:) A train derailed Saturday, sending diesel fuel and polypropylene plastic pellets into the Lehigh River in eastern Pennsylvania, police said.
There were no reports of injuries to train crew members, evacuations or hazardous materials threats to the public, the Lower Saucon Township Police Department said in a statement.
Emergency personnel were deployed and booms installed to combat the oil spill, he added.
Norfolk Southern, in a post on social media platform X, said it was investigating the incident, adding that its crew and contractors would remain on the scene in the coming days to clean up the accident.
Ancora Holdings, which owns a large stake in the company, called for the immediate ouster of Norfolk Southern Chief Executive Alan Shaw and called for an orderly restoration of the board, the company said in a statement after the crash.
Early last year, a Norfolk Southern Railroad train derailed, causing a fire that sent a cloud of smoke over the town of East Palestine, Ohio, and forced thousands of residents to evacuate.
President Joe Biden visited the area last month and called the train derailment an “act of greed.” He called on Congress to pass a bipartisan bill to strengthen rail safety laws.
