International Business Machines (NYSE:) announced Tuesday that it will launch a family of artificial intelligence models as open source software and help Saudi Arabia train its artificial intelligence system in Arabic.
Unlike competitors such as Microsoft (NASDAQ:), IBM is adopting an open access approach similar to Meta Platforms (NASDAQ:), making its Granite artificial intelligence models available for companies to customize.
Granite’s tools are designed to help developers create code faster. To monetize these models, IBM offers a paid tool called Watsonx that helps keep data centers running smoothly once set up.
The tech giant’s strategy is to capitalize on the fact that customers actually use artificial intelligence models, whether they come from IBM or other companies and whether they work in IBM data centers or not.
“We believe we are at the dawn of generative AI models,” IBM CEO Arvind Krishna told Reuters.
“At the end of the day, competition is good for customers. We also want to be safe and responsible.”
In addition, the Saudi Data and Artificial Intelligence Authority will use Watsonx to train its Arabic language model “ALLaM,” expanding IBM’s language capabilities to include multiple Arabic dialects.
