(Reuters) – More than 713,000 homes and businesses in Texas, Kentucky and other states were without power on Tuesday as storms continued to batter the region following the long Memorial Day holiday weekend, according to meteorologists and data from PowerOutage.us.
That’s down from more than 939,000 customer outages earlier Tuesday.
Tornado-spawning thunderstorms swept across the Southern Plains and Ozark Mountains, killing at least 21 people in four US states over the Memorial Day long weekend.
Texas-based energy company Oncor, a division of the California-based energy company. Sempra Energy (NYSE:) has the most outages, with more than 397,000 customers without power in the Dallas-Fort Worth area, according to PowerOutage.us.
Oncor said it is assessing damage, making repairs and restoring outages caused by storms bringing hail, rain and damaging winds, including wind gusts of up to 95 mph (153 kph), in the Dallas-Fort Worth area and surrounding areas .
“The damage to our facilities is extensive and recovery will likely take several days,” Oncor added on its website.
