Kia is recalling more than 427,000 Telluride SUVs due to a defect that could cause the vehicles to roll away while parked.
According to documents released by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, the countershaft and right front driveshaft on some 2020-2024 Tellurides may not be fully engaged. Over time, this can lead to “unintentional vehicle movement” while cars are in the park, increasing the potential risk of accidents.
Earlier this month, Kia America decided to recall all 2020-2023 model year models and target the 2024 model year Tellurides, NHTSA documents show. At that time, no injuries or accidents were reported.
The shaft engagement issue is believed to be caused by improper assembly—the recall covers 2020-2024 Tellurides that were manufactured between January 9, 2019, and October 19, 2023. Kia America estimates that 1% are defective.
To resolve the issue, the recall documents say, dealers will update the electronic parking brake software on affected vehicles and replace any damaged countershafts free of charge. Owners who have already incurred repair costs will also be reimbursed.
In the meantime, drivers of the affected Tellurides have been instructed to manually engage the emergency brake before exiting the vehicle. Drivers can also confirm whether their specific vehicle is included in this recall and find more information using NHTSA website and/or Kia review search platform.
Otherwise, owner notification letters will be sent out on May 15th and dealer notification will begin a few days before that.
